Surah Yunus, Jonah

Yunus is named after the prophet Jonah, whose people are the one case in the Qur'an of a whole nation warned, believing, and being spared.

The reference is brief — a single verse near the end — but it carries the weight of the surah. Everything before it has been about nations that were warned and did not listen. Jonah's people are the exception that shows the warnings were never empty threats.

Most of the surah is argument rather than narrative. It answers the objection the Meccans kept raising: why a man, why this man, why no sign. Its reply is that the sign is the Qur'an itself, and it invites anyone who doubts to produce a chapter like it.

Running underneath is a picture of how people actually behave. When the sea turns against a ship, the surah says, everyone aboard calls on God sincerely; once they are safely ashore they go back to what they were. It is one of the sharpest observations in the book, and it is made without any harshness.

There is also the account of Moses and Pharaoh, and of Pharaoh declaring his belief as the water closes over him, only to be told that the time for that has passed. The surah is careful about timing throughout: mercy is wide, and it is not unlimited.
