Surah Al-Kahf, The Cave

Al-Kahf is the surah most Muslims read on a Friday, and it is built out of four stories rather than argument.

The first gives the surah its name. A group of young men, refusing the religion of their people, take shelter in a cave, and God causes them to sleep there for a span of years so long that when they wake the world outside has changed entirely. The Qur'an tells the story and then declines to settle the details people argue over — how many they were, how long they stayed — saying instead that few know.

The second is of two men, one given two flourishing gardens and made arrogant by them, the other poor and grateful. The gardens are destroyed overnight. The third is the meeting of Musa with a servant of God, called al-Khidr in later tradition, who does three things that appear monstrous — damaging a boat, killing a boy, rebuilding a wall for people who refused them hospitality — and then explains each one. It is the Qur'an's most direct treatment of the difference between what a thing looks like and what it is. The fourth follows Dhul-Qarnayn, a traveller of great power, to the ends of the earth.

Read together the four turn on one theme: what people are tested with, and how little of it they control. Wealth, knowledge, power and faith itself are each held up in turn.

There is a report in Sahih Muslim that whoever commits the first ten verses of this surah to memory is protected from the Dajjal. The custom of reading the whole surah every Friday is older than anyone can trace and universal in practice; the reports supporting it specifically are of mixed strength, which is worth knowing without it changing what anyone does.
