Surah At-Tur, The Mount

Surah 52 · 49 verses · revealed at Mecca

At-Tur opens with an oath by the mountain, understood as the mount where Moses was addressed, and by a book inscribed on parchment unrolled.

The surah is mostly a run of questions, put one after another with no pauses, and they are the reason it is remembered. Were they created out of nothing, or did they create themselves. Did they create the heavens and the earth. Do they have the treasuries of your Lord. Do they have a ladder on which they listen. Do they have knowledge of the unseen and write it down. Are they asking you for a payment. Or do they have a god other than God.

An early report says that one of the chiefs of Mecca, a man who had not yet believed, heard this passage recited and said afterwards that it was then his heart nearly flew away.

Between the questions the surah describes those in the Garden reclining and talking about how they used to be among their families, afraid, and how God was gracious to them.

It ends by telling the Prophet to wait patiently for his Lord's judgement, since he is under His eyes, and to glorify Him when he rises, and in the night, and at the fading of the stars.

It also contains the verse that families hold on to: that those who believed, and whose offspring followed them in faith, will have their offspring joined with them, with nothing taken away from what their own deeds earned. It is among the most quoted lines at Muslim funerals for the young.
