Surah Ar-Rahman, The Most Merciful

Ar-Rahman is the most structurally distinctive surah in the Qur'an, and the reason is immediately audible even to someone who knows no Arabic. One question returns again and again: which of your Lord's favours will you deny? It appears thirty-one times in seventy-eight verses. A listener does not need the language to hear the shape of the thing.

The repetition is not decoration. Each time the question returns it follows something just described — the sun and moon running to a reckoning, the stars and trees, the sky raised and the balance set, the two seas that meet without merging, the gardens promised to those who stood in awe of their Lord. The surah lists what has been given, and after each item it stops and asks whether that, too, will be denied.

There is a second unusual feature. The question is put in the Arabic dual form, addressing two parties rather than one. The commentators understood this as humankind and the jinn together — the whole of the creation capable of being addressed at all. Very little of the Qur'an speaks to both at once in this way.

The surah's placement is genuinely disputed. It is commonly listed as Meccan, and much of its content fits that period, but a number of authorities held it to be Medinan, and some divided it between the two. Where the classical scholars did not agree, this site does not pretend otherwise.

Ar-Rahman has been called Arus al-Qur'an, the bride of the Qur'an, in a report of the same contested kind discussed under Ya-Sin above. Whatever the standing of that report, the name has stuck for a thousand years, and anyone who has heard the surah recited aloud will understand why it did.
