Surah Al-Mulk, The Dominion

Al-Mulk is thirty verses long and is, for a great many Muslims, the last thing they read before sleeping.

It begins with a striking statement: that God created death and life in order to test which of us acts better. Death is named before life, which readers have noticed for centuries. The surah then looks upward — seven heavens with no flaw in them, and an invitation to look again, and again, until the eye gives up and comes back tired having found nothing out of place.

From there it moves outward and downward. Birds are held in the air above us, spreading and folding their wings, and nothing holds them there but God. The earth is made level enough to walk on. Water is in the ground, and the surah asks plainly what anyone would do if it sank out of reach one morning. These are not decorative images; each is something the listener could check by stepping outside.

The surah is also unusually direct about the afterlife. It gives the people of the Fire a voice, and what they say is that they were warned, and that they did not listen, and that had they listened they would not be there. It is a rare passage where regret is reported in the first person.

Al-Mulk carries the names al-Munjiyah, the one that rescues, and al-Waqiyah, the one that protects. It is reported to intercede for the person who recites it; that report is found in Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud and is generally regarded as sound, though not to the level of Bukhari and Muslim.
